I saw news headlines about naked mole rats and how scientists had figured out their genomes. I was like, “Why bother?” But then I read the articles…
- NMRs can live for like 20+ years which is much longer than other rodents their size
- They live in colonies like ants or bees where there is one big queen who makes all the babies
- They are not warm blooded
- They don’t really get cancer
- Their skin does not feel pain
- Their lips are behind their teeth so they don’t get dirt in their mouths while digging
- They live in a low oxygen environment so they have slow metabolisms, small lungs and blood that is super awesome at using oxygen
- Babies are nursed by the queen for about 1 month and then workers feed them FECES until they are old enough to eat solid food.
- When they aren’t eating their own crap, they eat giant tubers that they find underground.

My co-worker told me a story about a porcupine eating the siding on her brother’s summer home. This prompted immediate Google research.
Here are some awesome things I learned about porcupines:
- They have a reputation for being irritable.
- They are rodents.
- They smell like old sawdust.
- Baby porcupines are born with soft quills that harden when exposed to air.
- They are born facing down and in their placental sack so they don’t wreck their mothers on the way out.
- Their Latin name means “quill pig”
- The North American species is the largest of all porcupines (typical-thanks McDonalds)

Whale shark skin can be up to 10 cm thick, which makes it the thickest skin in the world.

But we can still get our feelings hurt :(
